This 1995 article provides an in-depth look at CCAHA, from conservation treatment to preservation initiatives. It describes CCAHA’s founding in 1977 as a members-only regional conservation center serving institutional clients and details several recent grants for preservation services. The article even touches on conservation ethics and practices, using an example from the Maryland Historical Society to describe how CCAHA’s staff work with clients to ascertain the most advantageous treatment for every object. Along the way, the article cites numerous treatment examples, from the Declaration of Independence to waterlogged manuscripts to the label from a Corvette’s muffler.
