RHSP: Introduction to Historic Preservation

This webinar will look at the major folk architecture dwellings of the region, discussing dominant types as well as the preservation issues the buildings face. Throughout the discussion, appropriate approaches to preservation will be identified and discussed.

David Amott, Interim Executive Director, Preservation Utah

Dr. David Amott specializes in 19th century American architectural and urban history. Currently he is preparing publications that explore the relationship between architecture and polygamy in the Intermountain region during the 1880s. For the past year, David has served as the executive Director of Preservation Utah, the oldest historic preservation nonprofit west of the Mississippi River. 

About the Regional Heritage Stewardship Program:

Our Regional Heritage Stewardship Program (RHSP) brings vital preservation services to three regions of the country:

• The Intermountain West: Nevada, Utah, and parts of Idaho, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico
• Appalachian regions of Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia
• The Deep South: Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida

Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, RHSP was created in consultation with the American Association for State and Local History, which helped identify these regions as areas with limited access to conservators and preservation expertise.

Over 2017 and 2018, CCAHA conducted in-person workshops, webinars, and preservation needs assessments at institutions across Appalachia and the Deep South. In 2019, these services extended to new areas of those regions, as well as the Intermountain West.
