Rethink Your Storage Space with CCAHA

Every organization caring for collections faces space challenges. Whether you’re rehousing, reorganizing, renovating, or relocating, CCAHA can help you plan for efficient, preservation-safe, and accessible storage solutions.

Space Assessment

CCAHA’s Space Assessment is a customized service that helps organizations plan for efficient, preservation-safe, and accessible storage solutions through close consultation with our Preservation Specialist. This process includes:

  • A comprehensive questionnaire focusing on your current space restrictions and future goals
  • A half or full-day site visit to assess the space, take measurements, and consult with staff, volunteers, and board members who are involved in collections care and management
  • A detailed review of floor plans, blueprints, furniture and object measurements, and any relevant planning documents made available to the surveyor by your team
  • A final report and workbook with tailored recommendations and three floor plan options at different investment levels
  • A follow-up meeting six months after receiving the report to discuss implementation of the report's recommendations
  • Optional consultation services available at an hourly rate, including general preservation guidance, supplemental assessments, coordination with architectural teams, communication with storage vendors, and more

The final report and workbook provide clear, actionable recommendations and three floor plan options, each designed at a different price point and level of intervention (low, medium, high). This tiered approach allows your team to choose the best fit based on your budget and capacity.

The final report can also be used to support strategic planning and future fundraising efforts.

While the Space Assessment is not a formal space plan, which typically involves collaboration with architects or engineers on building design and construction, it can play a key role in preparing for one, if needed. A formal plan may be appropriate for organizations undertaking major renovations or new construction.

For many organizations, however, the Space Assessment provides exactly the level of support needed to move forward. The report and workbook help staff and board members better understand their current space, identify priorities, and take meaningful, informed steps toward improved collections care and long-term planning.
